PREGNANCY TOPIC OF THE WEEK
ARE YOU PREGNANT?
When you feel there’s a chance you could be pregnant, it’s important to find out if you really are. Several ways are available to determine if you are really pregnant:
- A blood test will let you know
- A home pregnancy test bought at any drugstore
- Have your doctor give you a urine test
- Lastly, an internal examination
Once you confirm that you are going to have a baby you need to choose a doctor that will oversee the next 9 months. Now is a good time to talk to your employer about maternity leave.
This can be one of the happiest times in your life. The excitement for you and all of your family is truly incredible. For those who were not hoping to get pregnant there are many resources that can help.
Blood test
One of the most reliable tests and even more so at the earliest stages. This test checks for HCG in your blood. As soon as you have missed your period you can have this test done.
Urine tests
Any local pharmacy or drugstore carries these tests.
Make sure to follow the instructions exactly so your result will be accurate. If you are an older woman or taking fertility drugs you have a greater chance of getting a false result.
You may want to take the test a week later if the test was taken right after your missed period and the result is negative (it says you aren’t pregnant. Tests are more reliable a week or two after your period and that’s why home test kits have more than one in the box.
There are family planning clinics that will administer a urine test free of charge.
Internal examination
Your physician can check you internally for changes in your cervix and uterus if it has been at least two weeks since your missed period. A Woman’s cervix will change color and be softer when she is pregnant. A woman’s uterus will already be enlarging in the first few weeks of becoming pregnant. Some physicians will still want blood or urine test to make sure you’re pregnant.
