Selecting the Gender of Your Future Child

While there are many debates over how ethical it is to choose the gender of your child before they are born, the fact remains that there are some natural methods you can use that will increase the likelihood of having a child of a specific gender. The ethics of it are up to you and while no method is 100% accurate, there are a few things that you can try that will help you increase your chances for having either a boy or a girl.

These methods are centered around the fact that the sperm who carry Y chromosomes (which are necessary for a boy) are very different from the sperm that carry the X chromosome (which are necessary for a girl). By understanding these differences, and choosing the right methods,  you are creating an environment where one type of sperm can outshine the other and reach the main destination first. Let's take a look at what you can do.

The Right Diet

Y sperm require an enivornment that is alkalai in nature, while X sperm need more acid. The PH levels of your body determine how thick the cervical discharge is and whether or not the desired sperm will be able to get through successfully. In order to have a girl, you need to eat a diet that is rich in calcium and magnesium. In order to have a boy, a diet rich in potassium and sodium is required.

The Right Time

The timing of when you have intercourse can greatly affect the gender of your child. Because the Y sperm need to reach the egg as quickly as possible, it is necessary to time intercourse to the day that you ovulate to increase your chances of having a boy. They will be able to reach the egg while it and they are still viable.

But in order to have a girl, you need to give the Y sperm time to die off, leaving the more durable X sperm behind. This means that you will need to time intercourse to approximately two to three days before ovulation. This gives the X sperm more than enough time to reach the egg.

The Right Position

The position you choose for intercourse can also determine the sex of your child. Once again, we fall back to the differences between sperm. The Y sperm need to reach their destination in as little time as possible. This means that they need to be released as close to the cervix as possible, shortening the trip they must take to the egg. Positions that allow for deep penetration are ideal.

In order to have a girl, you need to make it more difficult for the Y sperm to reach their target on time. This means that positions where shallow penetration is achieved are necessary. The sperm will be deposited further away from the cervix, giving the X sperm the chance they need to reach the egg, and allowing the Y sperm to die off.

How To Get Pregnant Naturally

How to get pregnant naturally

Infertility may be broadly defined as the inability to get pregnant after trying for at least one year without using any birth control. In Western countries, infertility affects an estimated 15% of the population. While a part of them are trying to conceive using alternative methods like IVF, others prefer to optimize the chances of getting pregnant naturally. Trying to get pregnant naturally may be very important, since many couples and individuals who are diagnosed with infertility may be able to get pregnant without treatment (and hence should be defined as "subfertile" rather than "infertile").

When trying to get pregnant naturally, the most important factor is to understand the menstrual cycle and the timing of ovulation, which leads to the optimum chances of getting impregnated. Usually, ovulation occurs around the fourteenth day, and hence, to get pregnant naturally, a couple should have as much sexual intercourse as possible between the twelfth and the fifteenth day. Different women have slightly varying menstrual cycles.Hence, to improve the chances of becoming pregnant, it is imperative to study one's periods, and calculate exactly when one ovulates.

Determining the signs of ovulation.

To check for the right timings of ovulation, a woman can do one, or many, of the following things:

  • Keep a calendar. Keeping a calendar to chart the days is an easy and effective method to determine the right time to have sexual intercourse.

  • Keep a check on vaginal fluids. Mucus discharge from the vagina usually becomes heavier, thinner, clearer and stretchy during ovulation when compared to the usual times.

  • Feel the inside of the vagina. During ovulation, the cervix is softer and slightly more open than usual.

  • Keep tabs on any sharp pain in the abdomen. Sharp pains in the abdomen, or some slight spotting, may be indicative of ovulation.

  • Other physical conditions. Headaches, bloating, breast tenderness and pain may be signs of ovulation.

Having checked for ovulation, there are some other things that an individual can do to increase the chances of getting pregnant naturally. These include lying still for a while after having sexual intercourse, avoiding the bathroom for about thirty minutes after having sexual intercourse, and most importantly, figuring out how many times one should have sexual intercourse.

Men often neglect their own part to play in this whole scenario. The sperms need to be of the correct constitution, correct shape and correct motility too, or else, however fertile the women may be, impregnation does not occur naturally. A way of ensuring that the sperms are undamaged is by wearing boxers instead of briefs. Boxers help in keeping the testicles from overheating and damaging sperms.

For both women and men, the anatomical and hormonal factors are not the only ones to be monitored and corrected. In most cases, failure to conceive may result from an improper diet, undue stress, the use of drugs like alcohol and nicotine, and even environmental factors such as proximity to harmful doses of pesticides. Abstinence from such factors goes a long way in ensuring a pregnancy.

One should always keep in mind that the holistic approach to solving a problem is the optimal way to tackle infertility. Getting regular health checkups, taking supplements to combat existing problem, exercising and stress reduction techniques are only part of the holistic solution to infertility which considers the problem as part of a whole unlike the conventional approach which tackles a specific body organ in its attempt to heal. The holistic approach is not only a surefire way to increase your chances of conception it also guarantees a safe and healthy pregnancy.

Infertility Treatments

How do you treat infertility?

Infertility is a global public health concern and affects approximately 10% - 15% of couples worldwide. This condition may stem from numerous anomalies in the body, ranging from infections and cysts in the ovaries and reproductive tract, to the disproportionate secretion of hormones by the glands. Infertility treatments are many, and are of various kinds. The best way to tackle it is to identify the exact cause of this condition and then alleviate it.

Available infertility treatments include:

  • Treating APA's. APA's cause blood clots and prevent implantation. A low dose aspirin therapy works wonders when treating APA's in the blood. For graver cases, anticoagulants are used to thin out the blood and improve blood circulation in the uterus.

  • Removing natural killer cells. Natural killer cells present in excess begin to attack the embryo. An intravenous treatment of gamma globulin, intralipid infusions and steroids are often used in this case.

  • Treating Antinuclear Antibodies (AA's). Abundance of antinuclear antibodies in the body is treated with steroids, intake of herbs that increase circulation, intake of antioxidants, zinc supplements, alkaline generating food and reducing the levels of stress. Balancing the responses of the immune system is the key to treating AA's.

  • Treating antisperm antibodies. To suppress the reactions in the body caused by antisperm antibodies interacting with the sperm, low doses of steroids are often made use of.

  • Treating age related infertility. Since age is a possible threat to female fertility, infertility treatments involving care of the kidneys and the spleen will help a woman keep the age related problems of pregnancy at bay.

  • Treating infections that hinder pregnancy. Antibiotic treatments to exterminate the harmful bacteria from the body are recommended by most doctors who conduct IVF's. Nutritious food and immune enhancing supplements are used to prevent harmful bacteria from growing in the body. When detected in one partner, antibiotic treatments for harmful bacteria must be carried out in both partners since they are likely to have infected each other during intercourse.

  • Treating the high prolactin levels in the body. Normally, to treat the elevated levels of prolactin in the body, natural remedies are suggested. These natural remedies include the intake of vitamin B, zinc and magnesium supplements, exercising, staying away from alcohol, and lowering the levels of stress. The intake of rebalancing hormones like Chasteberry, etc. is also helpful. Qi moving herbs are also quite helpful in these cases.

  • Treating leutal phase defects. In case of dealing with leutal phase defects, fertility drugs like Clomid, etc. are prescribed for boosting the levels of progesterone, which enable pregnancy. However, medicines such as these are bound to have side effects, and to avoid these said side effects, it is always beneficial to opt for natural methods of treatment. Traditional Chinese Medicine offers good help in these cases.

  • Treating tubal blockages. Laparoscopy is performed to remove small areas of blockage, however if that fails, In Vitro Fertilization is an option.

  • Treating sperm problems. Fertility drugs are available that enhance sperm production, and improve motility. Since sperm motility is one of the major factors affecting pregnancy, treatments in males are incomplete without looking into this.
Infertility treatments are possible with the whole new range of medicines that is available to the public these days, but it must also be kept in mind that these treatments can be painful, often come without harmful side effects and the results are far from guaranteed. On the other hand, following the holistic approach with a healthy diet, regular exercise, abstinence from alcohol, nicotine and other drugs, stress management, acupuncture etc. can almost guarantee positive and fast results.

The Real Cause of Infertility

The Real Cause of Infertility

Infertility can be defined in two ways: as inability to conceive after a year of regular sexual intercourse without contraception, or as repeated ectopic pregnancies, miscarriages or perinatal loss. Male and female specific factors account for about 30% of the infertility causes (individually);the combination of male and female causation leads to an additional 20% and the remaining 20% are caused by uncertain origins.

When one is dealing with infertility, as much as it is important to strictly follow the rules of the treatment, it is equally important to make sure that you have the correct diagnosis of the root cause of your condition. In this article you will find a broad outline, enumerating the various probable causes of infertility.

Why it is important to determine the causes.

Infertility may be caused due to a multitude of factors at a time, or it may be the result of perhaps the deviation of a certain single factor from its premeditated path. Since misdiagnosis can often lead to further fertility complications, the very first step of treating and curing infertility depends largely on indentifying the root cause right in the beginning of treatment.

The broad causes of infertility in females may be listed as follows:

  • Anovulation: In females, ovulatory problems are the most common causes of infertility. The failure to ovulate may be due to a number of factors:
  • Hormonal imbalance is the most frequent cause of anovulation; when the ovaries produce immature eggs, pregnancy becomes impossible.
  • Women with polycystic ovaries suffer from a decreased secretion of FSH and increased secretion of LH and testosterone; therefore polycystic ovarian syndrome may lead to anovulation in women.
  • Approximately 20% of the cases of infertility occur due to the malfunctioning of the hypothalamus, the gland which controls hormonal stimuli, resulting in immature eggs. The pituitary gland is responsible for the regulation of LH and FSH, and its malfunctioning produces immature eggs.
  • Damage to the ovaries caused by previous surgeries, ovarian cysts, tumors and infections may lead to production of immature eggs as well.
  • Premature menopause and follicular problems are also responsible for anovulation.
  • Improper functioning of fallopian tubes: Viral and bacterial infections of the fallopian tubes are the primary cause of their malfunction.
Appendicitis and colitis are abdominal problems which lead to blockage of the fallopian tubes. Tubal damages may also be caused by previous surgeries, which render the tubes incapable of passing eggs. Ectopic pregnancy, which occurs within the tube, is a potential threat to life that also causes tubal damage. Congenital tubal defects are rare, but not impossible to come across as causes of infertility.

  • Use of drugs: Smoking, drinking and using other drugs have been known to decrease the chances of getting pregnant.
  • Problems in the Immune system: This problem includes autoimmune reactions in the body and the creation of antisperm antibodies which exterminate sperms. Natural killer cells, which when present in excess, can damage the embryo in the uterus. The antinuclear antibodies cause inflammation of the uterus when present in excess. The presence of antisperm antibodies in the female's body kills off the sperms before they can fertilize the egg.
Although the causes of infertility are many, they are fairly easy to overcome, especially when diagnosed in the early stages. Using a holistic approach, comprising of the prescribed medicines, following a healthy diet, regular exercise, abstinence from alcohol, nicotine and other drugs, stress management, acupuncture etc. guarantees positive results. Due to the complex and multifactoral nature of infertility, the problem can be solved permanently only by dealing with it in the holistic way, which tackles all the root causes of this condition rather than focusing on specific triggering elements.

Signs of Infertility

What exactly is infertility?

The problems with either conceiving a child, or with carrying out the pregnancy to its eventual fruitful end, fall under the definition of infertility. Infertility is the incapability of an individual to become pregnant, in case of females, or the incapability to induce pregnancy, in case of the males. The inability of an individual to carry out a pregnancy to its full term is also dubbed infertility. How does one recognize infertility? What are the signs of infertility?

Signs of infertility are not always evident. Most people go through life without knowing there is a problem with their reproductive systems, attributing failed pregnancies to providence. In fact, miscarriages are the most common indicator of infertility. Signs of infertility in women:

In women, the signs of infertility are more readily recognized as compared to men. Endometriosis causes the lining of the uterus to grow outside the uterus.

Bacterial infections may begin around the uterus and spread to other reproductive organs, resulting in infertility. Fibroids in the uterus are indicative of infertility. Tumors in the cervix often cause stenosis, or narrowing of the cervix, which is a common indicator of infertility.

Ovulating before the tenth day and after the twentieth day of one's monthly cycle, pre-menstrual spotting, menopausal symptoms, etc. are indicative of luteal phase defect, and thus in turn are signs too.

Irregular menstrual cycles are the most common indication in females that they might have some problems with fertility. However, an irregular menstrual cycle is not conclusive in itself, but it is definitely one of the signs of infertility.

Issues regarding body weight are often indicators of being infertile. For a woman, being too thin, or anorexic, will definitely hinder pregnancy, since the body does not have the proper nutritional requirements, or the required strength.

Alternatively, obesity can also be a sign. Obesity is accompanied by hormonal imbalance, which affects the reproductive system and pregnancy. Signs of Infertility in Men:

Like females, in males too, either obesity, or anorexia, is an indication that he is infertile. Apart from these, anatomical defects may also be signs of infertility. Undescended testicles, or damage to scrotum and the gonads, are possible indicators too. Wearing tight undergarments, or exposing the testicles to heat, may render the person unable to produce the required number of sperms, or unable to produce sperms altogether, resulting in infertility.

Determining the signs of infertility:

There are many medical procedures for detecting the signs that help to determine whether an individual is infertile or not. Doctors usually prescribe one or more of the following medical tests:
  • Hysterosalpingography. A dye injected into the vagina is monitored to check for blockage in the fallopian tubes or uterus.
  • Laparoscopy. If disease and other physical problems are present in the ovaries, fallopian tubes, or in the uterus, infertility is suggested. This may be detected through laparoscopy.
Infertility is a problem which can be solved if it is addressed in the holistic way, which is, using a multifaceted method of healing. Getting regular health checkups, taking supplements to combat existing problem, exercising and stress reduction techniques are only part of the holistic solution to infertility. The holistic approach is not only a surefire way to increase your chances of conception it also guarantees a safe and healthy pregnancy.

TOPIC OF THE WEEK

PREGNANCY TOPIC OF THE WEEK

ARE YOU PREGNANT?

When you feel there’s a chance you could be pregnant, it’s important to find out if you really are. Several ways are available to determine if you are really pregnant:
  • A blood test will let you know
  • A home pregnancy test bought at any drugstore
  • Have your doctor give you a urine test
  • Lastly, an internal examination
Once you confirm that you are going to have a baby you need to choose a doctor that will oversee the next 9 months. Now is a good time to talk to your employer about maternity leave.
This can be one of the happiest times in your life. The excitement for you and all of your family is truly incredible. For those who were not hoping to get pregnant there are many resources that can help.
Blood test
One of the most reliable tests and even more so at the earliest stages. This test checks for HCG in your blood. As soon as you have missed your period you can have this test done.
Urine tests
Any local pharmacy or drugstore carries these tests.
Make sure to follow the instructions exactly so your result will be accurate. If you are an older woman or taking fertility drugs you have a greater chance of getting a false result.
You may want to take the test a week later if the test was taken right after your missed period and the result is negative (it says you aren’t pregnant. Tests are more reliable a week or two after your period and that’s why home test kits have more than one in the box.
There are family planning clinics that will administer a urine test free of charge.
Internal examination
Your physician can check you internally for changes in your cervix and uterus if it has been at least two weeks since your missed period. A Woman’s cervix will change color and be softer when she is pregnant. A woman’s uterus will already be enlarging in the first few weeks of becoming pregnant. Some physicians will still want blood or urine test to make sure you’re pregnant.

POSTPARTUM DEPRESSION

WHAT IS POSTPARTUM DEPRESSION & HOW TO DEAL WITH IT

Postpartum depression is a form of clinical depression that a woman or a man can develop after having a child. Postpartum depression is also known as post childbirth depression or postnatal depression. The condition is diagnosable and treatable. While women are more prone to postpartum depression, men can also suffer from it.
Since the mother is more involved physically with pregnancy and the birth of a child, post childbirth depression is very common among women. Statistically, it has been noted that anywhere from 5% to 25% of all mothers suffer from postpartum depression but that can be much higher. Not all cases of postpartum depression are reported and thus diagnosed hence the most accurate statistic is unobtainable.
Postpartum depression can develop right after childbirth or a few months after childbirth. Experts say that the first signs or symptoms of post childbirth depression can become obvious as early as the fourth week after childbirth.
While developing symptoms within the first fortnight is rare, it is still possible. Post childbirth depression is not solely associated with becoming a mother. It can also happen to a woman who has just had an abortion or a miscarriage.

CAUSES OF POSTPARTUM DEPRESSION

The exact causes of postpartum depression are not known. There are some studies that infer many causes but there is no consensus opinion in the medical fraternity. Some studies have shown that postpartum depression is caused by a deficiency of vitamins. Other studies have shown that the hormonal changes and thus the physical changes in the woman’s body leads to post childbirth depression.
Women with a history of depression or having been addicted to alcohol and smoking have also been studied to understand the correlation of such factors. Although it has been noted that such addictions do play a contributive role to post childbirth depression, they may not be necessarily the precise cause of it.
There are many triggers of post childbirth depression. They are birth-related psychological trauma, formula feeding instead of breast-feeding, low self esteem, childcare stress, prenatal depression or depression during pregnancy, prenatal anxiety, low or lack of social support, general stress of any kind, unhappy or troublesome marital relationship, infant temperament problems, maternity blues, single marital status, low or de-motivating socioeconomic status and unplanned or unwanted pregnancy.
As you would notice that the causes or triggers of postpartum depression are as varied as they can get. From economics to emotional factors, physical to societal, dozens of aspects can contribute to the development of post childbirth depression.

Symptoms Of Postpartum Depression

The symptoms of postpartum depression include but are certainly not limited to – sadness, hopelessness, poor self esteem, less or no attention from partner, a loveless feeling, guilt, overwhelm, sleep disorders, eating disorders, mood swings, inability to be consoled or comforted, physical exhaustion, mental and emotion fatigue, a sense of void, seclusion or social withdrawal, frustration, inability to care for the newborn or for the family, speech impairment, inability to write properly, anger spells, panic attacks or frequent spells of anxiety and a reduced or absence of sex drive.

How To Deal With Postpartum Depression

Postpartum depression is not a chronic condition. It doesn’t last a lifetime and is not fatal. While the condition is not fatal or catastrophic, the symptoms can lead to major troubles. Although rare, still there are women who become suicidal suffering from the symptoms of post childbirth depression and often marriages or families get to the brink of getting separated. Usually, postpartum depression lasts for several months up to a year but the symptoms may last longer if left untreated or unattended.
Dealing with postpartum depression may not appear to be easy but there are many ways to address it. Medical intervention is always desirable as that would not only help with accurate diagnosis but also, being under medical supervision would do away with any kind of side effects of a random step. There are medications to manage the symptoms. Hormone therapy can help one to deal with post childbirth depression.
There have to be some lifestyle changes. The mother needs to indulge in exercises and good diets. Nutritional deficiencies or a poor physical health would worsen the situation. Living an active social life, being in a happy and loving environment at home and at work and getting adequate support from family members, friends and relatives are important steps to manage postpartum depression.
Many women struggling with post childbirth depression join self help groups or communities where people with firsthand experience of postpartum depression can help one to get out of it. Marriage counseling, relationship counseling or a general psychological counseling may also help.
Trying out multiple ways to deal with postpartum depression is perfectly acceptable. Not doing anything about post childbirth depression is the worst way to go about it.

HOW OLD IS “TOO OLD”?

WHAT AGE IS TOO OLD TO GET PREGNANT

When is it too old to get pregnant? This is a question that has been troubling millions of women, as well as men, for a few decades now. The practice of avoiding conception until middle age across the world has put this ‘when too old to have a baby’ into context.
Couples in pre-modern times used to marry early and conceive early as well. The desire to further careers and also to reach a certain financial stability has compelled men and women everywhere to delay childbirth. While there are thousands of women willing to conceive early but being unable, many voluntarily put it off for mid thirties or even forties.

If you are looking for a definite answer to what age is too old to get pregnant then there is none. Women have conceived in their late forties and there are cases where women older than fifty and even sixty have got pregnant and delivered a perfectly healthy and normal baby. The concerns of infertility and less chances of conception certainly come into contention, especially when there is a rise in infertility among both men and women, however one has to look at the when too old to have baby from an entirely biological aspect. All other factors would be specific to a woman and her man. The standard biological aspects are only what one can consider to get a general perspective.
First, women are born with the eggs and the number of eggs only lessens as one ages. A man’s anatomy allows him to secrete sperm but a woman cannot create new eggs. Furthermore, the health of the eggs also deteriorates over time. They are at their healthiest post adolescence and twenties. As a woman reaches her thirties and heads towards forties, the number of eggs goes down and the ones that are there may not be entirely healthy.
Women aged 35 to 40 have increased chances of miscarriage and less chances of conception in the first place. Miscarriage can still be avoided with optimum care and attention. Women above 35 would invariably have less chances of conception however there can be exceptions with the proper methods.
Considering the woman’s health, chances of conception and the optimum health of the fetus and newborn child are all very important. Until Dr. Olson published the pregnancy Miracle it was though that after 40 was simply too old to conceive. However, we have found that those who follow her methods and program have a very good chance of getting pregnant well into their 40′s.

CAUSES OF INFERTILITY

WHAT ARE THE CAUSES OF INFERTILITY?

There are many causes of infertility in both men and women. Some of the causes are very simplistic and easy to cure while others are complex and incurable. Many people suffer from an unexplainable form of infertility. They are able without much effort to conceive their first child but can not seem to get pregnant a second time.
There are different causes for men and women. Some causes are similar among the two sexes like hormonal issues can exist in both men and women and can affect each sex similarly. For example when a women in struggling with a hormonal issue her ovulation will be interrupted while with a man the production of viable sperm will be reduced if there is a hormonal issue at play.

In Women

The causes of infertility in women range from hormonal problems which affect ovulation to congenital defects. Other causes include:
  • Infection- infection of the pelvis some STD’s any bacterial or viral infections can damage the tubes and cause scarring.
  • Tubal disease caused by previous surgeries, there are some surgeries that can cause scarring to the tube which prevents an egg from getting down the tube.
  • Ectopic pregnancy- when an egg becomes fertilized in the tube it can cause a host of issues even if the problem is caught early on and easily repaired the damage may be done.
  • Follicle problems ( which are currently unexplained) the follicle is released from the ovary but never erupts to reveal the egg so it never makes it out of ovary or down the tubes.
As mentioned earlier there are some cases where the cause can never be determined like with the second child infertility cases. There is no known cause and for all intents and purposes a pregnancy should take place but it just does not however this phenomenon normally self corrects over time without any intervention.

In Men

Male infertility can result from a host of issues. There are several things that need to occur for a man to be fertile. If any of the processes are interrupted than the result will be infertility.  The easiest cause of infertility to cure is when the infertility is due to certain medications, you stop the medication and you become fertile.
Male infertility can range from wearing underwear that causes the sperm to die from being kept to warm to serious medical conditions like cancer, infections Varicocele and other medical problems. The only way to determine what is causing the infertility is to have the series of tests conducted that will help to find the issue.

WHAT ARE THE DANGERS OF FERTILITY DRUGS?

THE DANGERS OF FERTILITY DRUGS

What are the dangers of fertility drugs? Any couple resorting to fertility drugs to aid in conception should be aware of the potential dangers. This shouldn’t imply that fertility drugs are undesirable since they have helped millions of couples to have a baby without any IVF or other expensive methods. There are many types of fertility drugs and doctors usually recommend varying levels of dosage. It is the type of fertility drugs and the dosage can lead to a few problems. There are side effects of all fertility drugs but the normal side effects do not have long term dangers.
There are two major dangers of fertility drugs that have been explored, researched and established as of now. The first is the conception of twins or triplets and the other is ovarian hyper-stimulation syndrome. The latter can often lead to ovarian cancer.
The chance of delivering multiple babies is very common. While some may not see it as one of the dangers of fertility drugs if they are financially sound and happy to have twins or triplets, it is actually not very desirable. When a woman is unable to conceive naturally and rapidly develops multiple fetuses, there is a risk to the health of the newborn babies. There may be numerous complications including miscarriage, abnormalities in the babies and health problems for the mother. Multiples are certainly one of the most common dangers of fertility drugs. With those who choose this procedure at least 10% will conceive twins or triplets and with some fertility drugs there is as high as a 30% possibility of conceiving multiples. Being under constant supervision of your doctor and taking a low dosage of fertility medication can mitigate such dangers.

Second, the ovary faces quite a few dangers from fertility drugs. The first is the ovarian hyper-stimulation syndrome (OHSS). It is a condition where the ovary is filled with fluid and during conception or actually ovulation this fluid gets released in the body. This can lead to several complications. The mother and the baby can be at high risk if OHSS is not prevented or not checked. Kidney ailments and ovarian cancer are also potential dangers of fertility drugs.
In addition to these dangers of fertility drugs, there are many side effects such as weight gain, headache, bloating, tender breasts, diarrhea, chest pains and muscle pain. It’s just not worth the risk. Get your copy of the Pregnancy Miracle and you too can become pregnant naturally and safely.

PLANNING FOR THE BIG DAY

 PLANNING FOR THE BIG DAY

The big day is finally coming! Having a baby is a life altering transformation for all women, and although pregnancy is the beginning of that change the actual childbirth is when major changes happen rather quickly. A woman will enter the hospital pregnant and leave with a newborn, and that is a huge transition.  How to prepare for that day can be both easy and difficult because although you can plan and put things in order, no new mother is fully prepared for that big day.  However, there are things that can be done to get you ready for childbirth, so you are not completely overwhelmed with the new arrival.

Understanding your body and the changes that will take place will better equip you for the big day.  Many women begin to feel painless contractions about four weeks prior to delivery.  These exciting contractions are called Braxton Hicks, and do not hurt, or harm the baby.  This is a sign that things are getting close, however, these contractions are not labor.
In order to get a better picture of labor, a Lamaze class should be taken to prepare you for the big day, and help you understand the stages of labor.  Lamaze is beneficial because it will teach you the different breathing techniques that are used as well as the differing birth position options.  Although, many women say they forget what they learn in Lamaze, the important information will come back.
Exercising will help you prepare for the big day by getting your body ready for delivery.  By exercising, you are keeping your body limber, and in shape, which will help you when it comes time to go through labor, push through delivery, and care for your newborn.
Preparing in advance for the big day will make sure that things go as smooth as possible.  Have your birth plan prepared and ready to go, so you know exactly what you want, and whom you want present.  Try to decide on whether or not you will receive medication to help alleviate the labor pains.  Often, this decision changes as the labor progresses, however, if you do have a plan, you may be more inclined to stick with your decisions.  In addition, whom you want in the delivery room should be notified early on, so there are no misunderstandings or hurt feelings that possibly put a damper on the day.
Read as much as you can on pregnancy and delivery because there are many perspectives available.  It is good to absorb as much information as you can as it will help you to be better prepared when the time comes to go to the hospital and give birth.
Of course, having your suitcase packed and ready to go is important, just in case labor comes on fast and hard.  With your bag packed, and your birth plan ready, you will be as ready as you can for the big day!

EXERCISE DURING PREGNANCY

WHAT KIND OF EXERCISE SHOULD YOU DO WHILE PREGNANT?

Exercise can make things go so much smoother. Pregnancy is a magical time where the body is constantly changing.  From the time the baby is conceived until the time of their arrival, the body will morph into something quite foreign to the mother. However, that is how it should be; the baby is setting up residence and making a new home for the next forty weeks. Many things will change through the duration of the pregnancy as you listen to the demands of your body.
Most pregnant woman experience extreme fatigue which causes them to rest and sleep more than usual. This is common because the body is working overtime and and that is very taxing on the mother. Extra sleep and rest are okay; however, a nine month hibernation or completely shutting down is not okay. Just because a woman is pregnant does not mean that she  should forgo her health. Maintaining a healthy exercise regime is key to a happy, healthy pregnancy and birth.
Exercise during pregnancy offers many benefits for the mom. Women who exercised throughout pregnancy have claimed that their labor and delivery do not seem so intense or prolonged. In addition, they are resilient, and seem to bounce back into shape quickly. Most pregnant women, however, feel nervous or scared about exercising because they are concerned they may harm the baby. A good rule of thumb for exercising during pregnancy is everything that was done before the pregnancy is acceptable during the pregnancy. So, if you are running three miles a day, then you can continue to run three miles a day.
There are many exercises that women should do during pregnancy and they can easily be incorporated into your daily workouts, however, before doing any exercise you should consult your doctor. Working your way up to thirty minutes of aerobic exercise a day is a healthy way to stay in shape during pregnancy. Aerobic exercises can be swimming, walking, light aerobic classes, cycling on a stationary bike, and of course running, but only if you ran before you became pregnant.

Weight lifting and strength training can be done; however, there are particular guidelines that should be following.  Lying on your back during the first trimester is not a good weight lifting position and should be avoided.  In addition, free weights should also be avoided; however, bands or weight machines can be used.  During pregnancy, women should refrain from lifting heavier weights, and should focus on lighter weight with more repetitions.
Exercises are healthy for everyone, so it is not surprising that it is good during pregnancy.  However, pregnant women need to listen to their body and adjust their exercise regimeaccordingly.

WHAT IS A GOOD DIET DURING PREGNANCY?

GOOD DIET DURING PREGNANCY

A good diet during pregnancy is of utmost concern.Pregnancy is that amazing time in a couples life when they witness and growth of the unborn, their child. Pregnancy is an adventure from the time you realize there’s a “bun in the oven” until the moment the baby enters the world.  Not only does having a child completely alter your life, but many changes must be made during pregnancy to ensure a safe and healthy baby, and mother.
In order to deliver a safe and healthy baby, there are things that a new mom must go without or avoid entirely. Most soon to be moms understand that there are many obvious things to avoid like cigarettes, alcohol, ibuprofen and even caffeine. Pregnancy do’s and don’ts are somewhat common sense and even nutritional choices should be easy to determine. In some cases though, pregnant women are not sure what a good diet during pregnancy consists of on a daily basis.
A solid pregnancy diet will include large amounts of calcium.  Calcium is not only crucial for bones, and teeth, but it is also helps blood to clot normally, muscles and nerves to function properly, and the heart to beat normally. A woman’s body needs more calcium than a  man’s body, and when a woman is pregnant; her body will require even more calcium.  1200 milligrams per day are the recommended daily allowance for pregnant women.
The baby requires a lot of calcium to grow, and what the baby does not get from the mother’s diet, the baby will take from the mother’s bones, teeth and wherever calcium is stored.  This can be detrimental for a mother’s health in the future.
Calcium is extremely important in a pregnancy diet, but there are other foods that provide important vitamins and minerals as well.  A good rule to live by when eating for two is staying away from junk food and empty calories.  These types of food, with high fat and sugar content will only add unhealthy weight and should be avoided.
Fruits and vegetables should be a staple in your pregnancy diet because they offer many vitamins and minerals that are needed for a healthy pregnancy.  In addition, whole grains and lean proteins and meats should be a part of your daily food intake.  And, believe it or not, you need to take in a certain amount of good and healthy fat for both you and the baby.  Fats that are found in guacamole or olive oil are healthy fats that do not increase bad cholesterol.
Pregnancy is not a license to eat whatever you want whenever you want.  You basically need to maintain a healthy diet and increase in vitamin enriched foods and minerals.  Stay away from sugars, bad fats, and foods with caffeine.
A healthy amount of weight to gain during pregnancy is between 25 and 35 pounds and this can be maintained with good eating habits.

WHICH VITAMINS AND SUPPLEMENTS TO TAKE?

 VITAMINS AND SUPPLEMENTS

It’s no surprise that prenatal care is crucial to the health of both the mother and the baby during pregnancy and through delivery. Doctors will generally prescribe prenatal vitamins for the expectant mother to ensure she gets the vitamins and minerals both for her own well being as well as the developing baby.
To ensure that a pregnancy leads to a healthy delivery, it’s a good idea to combine a balanced diet with doctor recommended supplements. A mother’s nutritional needs change while she is pregnant and different foods and vitamins are needed as the baby develops over the course of the pregnancy.
A healthy and balanced diet should provide all the vitamins needed for a healthy pregnancy but it’s difficult to always eat right. Expecting mothers especially require more iron, folic acid, and calcium to keep them healthy and strong throughout pregnancy and after delivery. Pregnancy vitamins can keep both mother and baby healthy during this crucial time.
Iron is helps both the mother’s and the baby’s blood to carry oxygen to muscles and the brain. This is important especially in developing brains that are growing so fast. Folic acid is a crucial for a baby to develop a normal, healthy brain and spine and to avoid potential defects in these areas. Calcium is an important supplement for a pregnant woman to get more than the normal amount; it will protect her own bone density as the baby uses her body’s calcium to fuel its own growth and development.
Prenatal vitamins are specially designed to supply plenty of what growing babies need as well as making sure that mother’s own body isn’t depleted of nutrients. These are especially important for women who are vegetarian or vegan, who smoke, who have food allergies or intolerances or who may be having twins or multiples. Be sure to tell your doctor any health problems you have or dietary restrictions you follow; only your doctor can be sure what needs to be addressed.

With a healthy diet, moderate exercise, regular check ups, and the right pregnancy vitamins an expectant mother will have a great start to her pregnancy. Staying healthy and fueling baby’s growth and development gives him the best chance to be born at a healthy weight without problems. Your health practitioner is a great source for questions or advice that you may have regarding which vitamins or supplements are right for you and for your pregnancy.

CARING FOR YOUR NEWBORN

NEWBORN TIPS

Having a newborn is as frightening as it is exciting.  New parents are entering uncharted waters and need to proceed with caution and get as many tips as possible to help them along the way.  Although, every baby is different, every mother is different, and every circumstance is different, there are some new mom tips that are helpful and beneficial to all moms.
It is very important for the baby, and the mental stability of the mother, to get the baby on a schedule.  The baby is moving into your life, and they need to learn to live around your schedule; therefore, you need to work hard to develop a schedule for the baby.  Many will tell you to wake the baby up every two hours, and this is good in the daytome; however, this is not a good practice at night.  During the night hours, let the baby sleep as long as possible.  The baby will get up on their own when they are hungry or need to be changed.  During the day, however, it is important to wake the baby every so often during the day and try to keep the baby awake for periods of time.  This is hard work, but consistency will pay off, and you will find that a schedule for your newborn will result in a long-term schedule.
Mothers need to remember that babies cry and sometimes, they are crying for no apparent reason.  If the baby has a full tummy and has a clean diaper, the baby is more than likely just be tired and having a difficult time falling asleep.  In some cases however, many newborns and babies have colic, and that will cause the baby to cry out of pain, often, the baby’s tummy becomes tight and hard because it is filled with gas bubbles.  Unfortunately, there is not much you can do to help the baby through the pain.  Typically, pain comes when those gas bubbles are broken up, and there are some over the counter medication that can help alleviate the pain and break up the bubbles.  Massaging the baby’s tummy also helps to break up the gas bubbles and relieve the pain.
Do not get into bad habits with your newborn because they are hard to break.  When it is time for the baby to sleep, put the baby in their crib.  For many parents this can be very hard because they want to be near the baby; however, it is important to develop healthy sleeping patterns.  The crib should be free from anything that can harm them, or any food items.  Never put a baby to bed with a bottle.

It is okay to play with the baby during the daily feedings, however, when the baby wakes up in the middle of the night feedings should be all about business.  Keep the lights dim or off, do not coo or talk with the baby, and if you can, throw their receiving blanket in the dryer so you can swaddle them in a warm blanket to help relax them.
Unfortunately, babies do not come with instructions so read as much as you can and seek the advice of those that have had babies.  Babies do not stay little for very long, so enjoy every moment possible.
