WHAT AGE IS TOO OLD TO GET PREGNANT
When is it too old to get pregnant? This is a question that has been troubling millions of women, as well as men, for a few decades now. The practice of avoiding conception until middle age across the world has put this ‘when too old to have a baby’ into context.
Couples in pre-modern times used to marry early and conceive early as well. The desire to further careers and also to reach a certain financial stability has compelled men and women everywhere to delay childbirth. While there are thousands of women willing to conceive early but being unable, many voluntarily put it off for mid thirties or even forties.
If you are looking for a definite answer to what age is too old to get pregnant then there is none. Women have conceived in their late forties and there are cases where women older than fifty and even sixty have got pregnant and delivered a perfectly healthy and normal baby. The concerns of infertility and less chances of conception certainly come into contention, especially when there is a rise in infertility among both men and women, however one has to look at the when too old to have baby from an entirely biological aspect. All other factors would be specific to a woman and her man. The standard biological aspects are only what one can consider to get a general perspective.
First, women are born with the eggs and the number of eggs only lessens as one ages. A man’s anatomy allows him to secrete sperm but a woman cannot create new eggs. Furthermore, the health of the eggs also deteriorates over time. They are at their healthiest post adolescence and twenties. As a woman reaches her thirties and heads towards forties, the number of eggs goes down and the ones that are there may not be entirely healthy.
Women aged 35 to 40 have increased chances of miscarriage and less chances of conception in the first place. Miscarriage can still be avoided with optimum care and attention. Women above 35 would invariably have less chances of conception however there can be exceptions with the proper methods.
Considering the woman’s health, chances of conception and the optimum health of the fetus and newborn child are all very important. Until Dr. Olson published the pregnancy Miracle it was though that after 40 was simply too old to conceive. However, we have found that those who follow her methods and program have a very good chance of getting pregnant well into their 40′s.
